Hawley was very curious about the legal authority and the tools that the FBI is using to collect the cellphone data as part of its investigation into the Capitol attack.Last question, Director Wray. If someone accidentally butt dialed a couple of Proud Boys and an Oath Keeper, you wouldn't like know what they talked about right?

When you say you're not familiar, are you saying you don't know whether or not the bureau has scooped up geolocation data, metadata from cell phone towers? Are you saying you don't know if they did that? Tell me what you know about this. . . . Here's what I'm trying to get at, and I think it's what senator [Mike] Lee was trying to get at. How are we going to know what you're doing with it, and how do we evaluate the bureau's conduct if we don't know what authorities you're invoking, what precisely you're doing, what you're retaining? You said to him repeatedly you weren't familiar with the specifics. You've now said it to me. I'm not sure how this committee is supposed to evaluate anything that the bureau is doing. You're basically saying, just trust us. How do we know? Do we have to wait until the end of the investigation to find out what you've done?”
Sen. Josh Hawley asks FBI Director Chris Wray about the FBI's collection of cellphone metadata during the Capitol insurrection.

Wray: "I feel confident that we are using various legal authorities to look at metadata," but says he can't speak to specifics.pic.twitter.com/af56EsQQXm
Hawley’s questions to Wray are all a/b learning what info the FBI has on him & his co-conspirators. He’s not good at hiding his self interest. Every question- Geolocation, metadata, cellular records, bank records & encryption. Hawley is afraid of where this investigation is going

Why is Josh Hawley asking the FBI director about capabilities of cell phone tracking? #AskingforAFriend? Funny Gambino crime jokes in this segment. https://t.co/HTfHufp4x9
— Malcolm Nance (@MalcolmNance) March 3, 2021
Hawley, "How does this cell phone tracking work".
— Terry Jarmain (@TerryJarmain) March 3, 2021
Wray, "Would rather not talk in an open setting".
Hawley, "Could you text it to me".
Wray, "Sure".
Hawley, "Would you like my cell number".
Wray, " We've had it since Jan, 6th".
Josh Hawley's questions for FBI Director Chris Wray are thinly veiled attempts at figuring out what evidence the FBI has against Hawley, and Wray clearly knows it.

Josh Hawley sure is worried about what cell phone data the FBI might have.

Apparently, being sedition-curious is only fun when you think you won’t get caught.
Earlier, I was thinking if I was a senior level official at the FBI, and had watched the hearings with Director Wray in their entirety, my first action would be to open an investigation into Josh Hawley, obtain records of his correspondence. @MalcolmNance just said as much, too.

Josh Hawley: "Director Wray, let's say, hypothetically, a lawmaker did something to encourage these insurrectionists. And perhaps that lawmaker, we'll call him Tosh Mawley, made calls to people involved. The FBI couldn't get....phone records showing that, right? Hypothetically?"
— Rex Huppke (@RexHuppke) March 2, 2021
"And, Director Wray, let's say, still hypothetically, that Mawley factory reset his phone to get a fresh start for no particular reason. Would the FBI still be able to find out who he had calls and text with on 1/6?"
— Denise Shearin π π· (@DeniseShearin) March 2, 2021
Hawley, 'On a side note Mr. Wray, I'd like to report my cellphone stolen on Jan. 5th... no 4th, my phone was stolen on the 4th'
— Bill McLean (@BillMcL11331845) March 2, 2021
Josh Hawley: “I’m curious, and please understand this question is hypothetical in every sense, but what’s the typical expected sentence for someone who incites violent insurrection?”

“Do you have information from my cell phone company or my bank connecting me to the insurrection that I helped incite?”
— Brian Guest (@brguest20) March 2, 2021
- Josh Hawley
"This hypothetical guy, Tosh, from Kansasouri, is a really good guy. I don't know him but I'd bet has a heart of gold. Women find comfort in his good looks & charm. He's a "catch", a real diamond in the rough. Everyone's best friend. Why give him a hard time, Director!?"

Last question, Director Wray. If someone accidentally butt dialed a couple of Proud Boys and an Oath Keeper, you wouldn't like know what they talked about right?
— The Lone Appleπ (@The_Lone_Apple) March 3, 2021
Director Wray responds: "Well, no, we can get those records even after Senator Mawley tries to delete them. And with that pretty boy face of his, hes going to be mighty popular in prison. Hypothetically."

Josh Hawley questioning Wray regarding “what happened to the cell phone data” is like a murderer asking the Detective “how much evidence do you have”. Wray won’t tell him.

He looked very nervous - like a child with a mouthful of cookies, hoping Mom doesn’t look in the cookie jar.

Hawley is terrified that they tracked his phone on 1/6. Hawley and Lee are wetting themselves over this issue. Fun to see them squirm.
