Within one hour of Team Trump's announcement last week, some computer-savvy people discovered the company's completely unsecured BETA testing site, immediately signed up (using available (!) names like "donaldjtrump" and "mikepence"), and began posting shit to it. After the prank was discovered and the site was deleted, another unsecured site was found — and the fun started all over again! (Pillow Man Mike Lindell's website also immediately became an unmitigated clusterfuck!)
I’m guessing that whoever is in charge of building this has no experience in either large-scale social media, or even large scale software development. They probably think it’s the same as building a marketing website or e-commerce store. Prepare for an embarrassing train wreck.

Raise your hand if you're not surprised the failed blogger's new blog attempt has already failed.
— PeachesMom (@NCaliPeaches) October 21, 2021
Starting and supporting a social platform requires competency. Trump surrounds himself with incompetent people. They stole code and claimed it was proprietary. Truth will go down like all his other failed ventures.https://t.co/Xcv3NCHlgG

Well that looks familiar 😬

For those asking, the public domain for what appeared to be the mobile beta of Trump's new social media platform 'TRUTH Social' has been taken offline.

"Truth Social" is already claiming the site is "proprietary," even though it appears clearly based on open-source Mastodon coding. https://t.co/eeuBjoOx8I via @HuffPostPol

Not only is Trump's new "social media network" just a Mastodon implementation, they're also not abiding by the open source licensing agreement (because of course they aren't). https://t.co/CKOvuxEv1f
— The Call is Coming from Inside the Nash (@Nash076) October 22, 2021
BREAKING - Trump’s Truth Social is ALREADY in legal trouble for ripping off the open-source platform Mastodon and violating a license. They either need to rebuild the Truth Social codebase, or they’ll get pretty much destroyed in court. #ETTD

Update: Trump's social network is breaking the code-sharing rules of Mastodon, the software the entire site is built on, @conservancy says. If they fail to fix within 30 days, "their rights and permissions in the software are permanently terminated" https://t.co/qAmJYkQQS1
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021
Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko told TPM in an email that TRUTH appeared to violate the terms of use that the software sets forth: making the source code available, and having a copy of the general product license available to users.https://t.co/Qp0uil5810 via @TPM

VERY NASTY TWEET. REPORTED! https://t.co/kNI8umeSPf
— TheTRUTHSocial (@TheTruthSocial) October 22, 2021
Numerous people pointed out the idiocy and hypocrisy of Trump's Terms of Use. In his announcement, Trump boasted that his social network would be a home for "free speech" and "varied opinions". However, Trump will ban anyone from the site if they say anything bad about him or if they make fun of the website. (Also, the owner of "TRUTH Social" will ban people for "using excessive capital letters".)Donald Trump launching a social network named Truth. What’s next, a Steve Bannon skincare line?
— Tim Hannan (@TimHannan) October 21, 2021
Earlier this year, Trump shut down and deleted his "From The Desk" blog after only 29 days because people were making fun of it. (No one was reading it, also, but suffering humiliation was worse for Trump than being ignored.)
Trump's social network is where families will come together to have an amazing time and share their viewpoints of the world. "We welcome these varied opinions," Trump's social network said https://t.co/zpMu7eYmit pic.twitter.com/XFyfbUVfxj

Trump's social network TRUTH Social has a rule banning "excessive use of capital letters": https://t.co/oeKykENxV7
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 21, 2021
One of the rules for Trump's new social media site is that you can't use it to make fun of Trump’s new social media site. Because if there’s anything Republicans love, it’s free speech, and if there’s anything they hate, it’s snowflakes. #TruthSocial #RealTime pic.twitter.com/50yIXM8njH

1. Trump's team announced grand new social network, linking to App Store and saying it was in beta. The app company name was T Media Tech. Within an hour, smart people had found the totally open, unsecured mobile test site at ... https://t.co/lTgbiAE8sb. Hacker genius at work.
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021
2. People, myself included, were able to make fake accounts with literally zero security checks for Trump, Mike Pence, & others. The "donaldjtrump" account posted a photo of a pig pooping on its own balls. So, all in all, not going super great so far. pic.twitter.com/cburTaValM
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021
3. Trump's team took that site offline. But other smart people used a search engine to find all servers with the same website icon - and found another test domain, again unsecured, with a bunch more stuff they probably didn't wanna show. As of this morning, it's offline too pic.twitter.com/x9TjwURDpT
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021
4. What else? The app listing used Chevy and NYT logos; both companies told me they were unauthorized. And the head of Mastodon, maker of the social-network code Trump's site relies on, is talking with legal counsel about whether site is breaking its rules https://t.co/JQV8HLsGg2
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021
5. Trump's free-speech site says you can be banned for making fun of it or using too many capital letters. Also, Trump's team filed trademark applications for "truthing," "post a truth," "follow the truth" and "retruth." Normal stuff https://t.co/JQV8HLsGg2 (h/t @MikaelThalen) pic.twitter.com/jDEKhr4W0w

Haven't seen a social network launch this messy since ... Gettr, the last Trump-linked social network, which people flooded with fake accounts and anime porn almost immediately: https://t.co/cHuA4oD8JY
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021
But Trumpworld has been promoting this launch for months. His former senior adviser (and now Gettr CEO) said it would draw “tens of millions of people,” become “the hottest ticket” in social media and "completely redefine the game" https://t.co/rYavktQNH6
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021
Trump's blog croaked after 29 days. Building a functioning social network will be much, much harder. "Successful start-up social platforms require massive amounts of patience and personal investment, and Trump isn’t really known for either of those": https://t.co/8rvfVGA1pd
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 22, 2021

Anyone can create an account on Trump's social network TRUTH Social using a publicly available link. I literally just registered "mikepence." The site hasn't even launched yet and it's already this vulnerable pic.twitter.com/v9nPN8ibDS

Thank you TRUTH Social. Good to be here pic.twitter.com/tD3ClXWCss
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 21, 2021
Trump Jr. said on Fox News tonight that TRUTH Social is in "beta testing" for the next few weeks, with a full launch Q1 2022. I'm assuming "allow anyone to sign up as mikepence" is not a beta feature https://t.co/otjRktaYHz
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 21, 2021
The "donaldjtrump" account of Trump's TRUTH Social has already been hacked. pic.twitter.com/LDQ5w24tcV
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 21, 2021
Ok, not quite a hack. Pranksters found an unreleased test version of what appeared to be Trump's social network site, made a fake account in Trump's name, and then used it to post the meme image "Pig Poop Balls." Just bringing you the important news, folks
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 21, 2021
But wait, there's more. Trump's social network shut down the other test site, but smart people on the Internet ran a search of its favicon and found another test domain, which I was just able to create a fake account for. This security is ... not great! https://t.co/JQV8HLsGg2 pic.twitter.com/ginSjvGnw6
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 21, 2021
They loaded up hundreds of old Trump posts (sorry, Truths) and have been Favoriting and ReTruthing them. Love to leave my test software out in the open for several months pic.twitter.com/peLb0KR4Gq
— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) October 21, 2021
Here are some accounts of people who appear to be working on the unreleased TRUTH Social site. Also, a fake ESPN profile? I promise you, it is possible to build a website without exposing all of this on the public Internet pic.twitter.com/GhFeuBcqAb

Update: The second (totally unsecured) test site for Trump's social network, which showed how his team had created fake accounts for Trump and Hunter Biden, has been taken offline. It looked like this: pic.twitter.com/5eOiWcJKQ4
